Calvin is now a hurricane

National Weather Service map Hurricane Calvin, now a category-1 hurricane, continues its westward path toward the Central Pacific Basin.

Calvin became a hurricane overnight, the third hurricane of the 2023 Pacific hurricane season.

As of 5 a.m. today, the center of the storm was 2,555 miles east-southeast of Hilo, still much closer to Mexico than to Hawaii.

Calvin is a category-1 storm with maximum sustained winds at 75 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles.

The storm is moving west at 13 mph and a west to west-northwestward motion is expected to continue during the next several days. Some additional strengthening is forecast during the next day or so. Gradual weakening is forecast to begin by the weekend, as Calvin begins to move over cooler water.

On its current track, Calvin is forecast to enter the Central Pacific Basin as a tropical storm early Monday morning.
