Julia Guerpo Cuaresma, 88, of Captain Cook died Aug. 28 at home. Born in Kukuihale, she was a cook at Kamuela Deli, macadamia nut sorter for Hawaiian Holiday and member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa. Services at a later date. Adrein “Kalani” Haena Kalani Sr., 56, of Napoopoo died Aug. 20 at Kona Community Hospital. Born in Honolulu, he was a security guard for Viking Services of Hawaii. No services. Survived by mother, Charlotte McShane of Honolulu; children, Kauilani Kalani and Kaipo Kalani both of Hilo, Alice Kalani and Kuulei Kalani of Honolulu, Herman Kalani III of North Kohala; brothers, Clayton Thomas and Armand Kalani Sr. of Honolulu; sister, Armanda Figueroa of Kailua-Kona; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews. The Rev. Beverly Iwalani Mahi Samson, 67, of Hilo died Aug. 31 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, she was aretired sales clerk for Ross Dress for Less and a minister at Ka Uhane Hemolele O Ka Malamalama Church. Celebration of life at a later date. Survived by daughter, Shawyne Samson of Hilo; sons, Beau Mahi of Oahu, Benjamin “Mahi” Samson III of Kailua-Kona, Bryson L. Samson, Edmund Keola Daog Jr. and Edward Keone Daog of Hilo; sisters, the Rev. Charolette P. Mahi of Hilo and Cindy (Simone Texeira) Rivera of Kauai; brother, Charles “Charlie Boy” (Nanette) Mahi of Hilo; brother-in-law, Paul H. Grant “Ed” Edward Smay Jr., 68, of Keaau died Sept. 1 at Life Care Center of Hilo. He was born in Los Angeles. No services. Survived by husband, Ralph Brydges; son, Mark Smay; daughter, Michelle Lopez; four grandchildren. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Susan Leilani Villanueva, 71, of Hilo died Sept. 4 at home. Born in Honolulu, she was co-owner of Reuben’s Mexican Food. Services pending. Survived by husband, Ruben Villanueva Sr. of Hilo; sons, John Roger Nobriga, Jerod (Shaney) Hosea Kahoalii, Jason (Bethany) Keone Kahoalii Antonio, Jerome Chad Heath and Reuben (Tanya) Villanueva Jr. of Hilo; brothers, Kenneth Antonio and Roger Antonio of Hilo, Chucky Antonio of Maui; half-sister, Martha Cornelio of Honolulu; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
