The annual rummage sale hosted by the Hilo Association for Family and Community Education members on June 24 at the YMCA was a big success.
Proceeds from the rummage sale go toward the Trimble Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships statewide to Hawaii high school seniors pursuing degrees in health, safety and public welfare.
“The Hilo FCE members work to build strong families and communities,” said association member Lee Watanabe.
Since the 1930s, FCE members have collaborated with the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources Cooperative Extension Service to reach and teach research-based information to their members and others, Watanabe said.
Other projects conducted annually include food and nutrition demonstrations in March, the FCE Fair on the first Saturday of May, books for newborns given to the Hilo Medical Center and ongoing quilt-making for foster care children and nursing homes.
FCE also conducts an essay and art contest for all fourth-graders as part of the Character Counts! Coalition, Dress a Girl Around the World providing pillowcase dresses to children in Third World countries, Reuse, Reduce and Recycle programs and beach cleanups.
In addition, FCE members volunteer at hospices, the American Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Association, mental health programs, American Lung Association, Puna Neighborhood Place and Salvation Army.
Membership is open to all individuals regardless of age, race, creed or national origin. For information, contact Carolyn Sewake, Hilo association president, at 935-7703.
