Bridge project nears completion

Work continues on the Umauma Bridge rehabilitation project, which is scheduled to be complete May 20, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The $31 million improvement project started mid-2013. As of Monday, one lane of traffic is being allowed over the bridge in the mornings, with two-way traffic starting at 3 p.m. each day.

A one-lane temporary bridge has been used since the project started.

The bridge, built in 1911, is located on Highway 19 near Hakalau.
