During the week of March 30 to April 5, Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 7; South Hilo, 4; Puna and South Kohala, 2 each.
So far this year, there have been 249 DUI arrests compared to 345 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27.8 percent.
There have been 362 major accidents so far this year compared to 443 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18.3 percent.
So far this year, there have been six official traffic fatalities compared to four during the same period last year, an increase of 50 percent.
To date, four of those fatalities have been linked to drivers impaired by drugs, and none to alcohol impairment, police said.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
