Pine nuts have been such a staple ingredient in Italian cuisine since the days of ancient Rome. Roman soldiers ate them as they marched into battle. At Pompeii, archaeologists found pine nuts in the volcanic ash.

Hawaiian Style Band to perform at VAC

Volcano Art Center’s Sounds at the Summit will feature multiple Na Hoku award-winning group Hawaiian Style Band beginning at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.

20th annual Lili‘uokalani birthday festival slated

The last reigning monarch of Hawaii was born Sept. 2, 1838. Her name at birth was Lili‘u Loloku Walania Kamaka‘eha. After her baptism, her name was Lydia Kamaka‘eha. Upon being named heir to the throne, “okalani” was added to her given name as an indication of her royal rank, resulting in the name we know now: Lili‘uokalani.
