Hilo Bay OK’d for recreational activities
Warning signs posted along Hilo Bay shoreline were removed earlier today, Hawaii County announced in a press release.
Water sampling results showed that the shoreline and beach are now safe for recreational activities.
The warning signs were posted Monday after sewage was discharged from a manhole on Waianuenue Avenue near Hilo High and Intermediate schools.
Crews removed a blockage and restored normal flow around 2 p.m. Monday, but by then about 6,300 gallons of wastewater had overflowed, traveled down the street, and entered a storm drain.
