Week 7 of the 2026 Big Island high school track and field season took place across the island with events throughout the week at Hawaii Preparatory Academy and Hilo High.
HPA’s boys relay team of Jack Soon-Ludes, Micah McDowell, Santino Tribuiano and Philipp Gerstengarbe clinched a Ka Makani record in the 4×800, finishing in 8:34.33 in Saturday’s contest in Waimea.
Soon-Ludes also had a dominant day individually, showing off in front of his home crowd with wins in the boys 800 (2:05.62) and 1,500 (4:18.44). He was also part of the winning 4×400 team, where his squad finished in 3:38.93.
Soon-Ludes has won 12 individual races during his junior season.
Gerstengarbe also claimed a solo victory of his own, taking gold in the boys 3,000 race with a personal-best time of 9:18.07. The finish was also a stadium record.
Also highlighting Ka Makani’s running team was senior Kirra Geesey, who won the girls 800-meter run for the fourth time this season in just over 2 minutes, 30 seconds. Geesey was also part of two winning relay teams that posted season-best times in the 4×400 (4:24.87) and 4×800 (10:21.34).
Kamehameha-Hawaii junior Chanse Kaaua-Long turned heads in the boys discus throw once again, throwing for a meet best 153 feet, three inches. Kaaua-Long has been dominant in the discus all season — winning the event four times and clinching a school record of 155 feet, eight inches on March 28.
Senior Violet Schaut led Konawaena’s running team, picking up personal wins in the girls 100 with a stadium-record time of 12.16 seconds and 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 55.42 seconds. Schaut, arguably the fastest girls short-distance runner on the island, has won every individual race she’s competed in this season — going 10-for-10 across the 100, 200 and 400-meter sprints.
Teammate Kea Sanders won the boys 100 for Kona, finishing in 11.16 seconds. Sanders was also part of the meet-record relay team in the boys 4×100, as he, Trenton Wong Yuen, Lucas Carvalho and Aden Sokham raced in 42.56 seconds — edging the previous record of 42.60 seconds.
Sokham additionally won the boys 400 with a personal-best and venue record of 49.52 seconds. His speedster sibling, Paxton Sokham, won the boys 200 with a personal record and ninth-best time in the state — 22.42 seconds.
Kamehameha-Hawaii junior Isaiah Kanae led his school valiantly, collecting wins in the boys 110-meter hurdles (15.85 seconds), high jump (1.77 meters) and triple jump (12.78 meters). His triple jump mark was posted as 10th-longest in the state.
Kealakehe sophomore Alaska Delangen finished the girls 200 with a win, running in a personal-best time of 24.43 seconds. Delangen also notched a personal best in her pole vault victory, launching 3.12 meters (10-03.00).
Zadie Bolton led the Waveriders’ long-distance runners by winning gold in girls 1,500, crossing the finish line at the 5:06.15 mark. The sophomore has won the event five times this season.
To no one’s surprise, Kohala junior Mari Ontiveros dominated in the girls shot put and discus once again, winning both events. She threw for 38 feet, five inches in the shot put and 111 feet, 10 inches in discus. Between both events, Ontiveros has won 11 times.
St. Joseph senior Michaela Costales won her first field event of the year, leaping 4.88 meters in the girls high jump, which was a personal record.
During Wednesday’s Viking Vault Fest at Hilo High, KSH senior Kaimanamaikalani Bowman won the boys vault with a launch of 13 feet, six inches. Waiakea junior Keiari Weaver claimed victory in the girls vault after launching 10 feet flat.
