College highlights: Pavia does it again as No. 17 Vanderbilt beats No. 10 LSU
Diego Pavia ran for two touchdowns and passed for one to help No. 17 Vanderbilt defeat No. 10 LSU 31-24 on Saturday in Southeastern Conference play at Nashville, Tenn.
Pavia passed for 160 yards and rushed for 86, and the Commodores (6-1, 2-1 SEC) scored on five of their first six possessions and their defense kept the Tigers (5-2, 2-2) at bay in the fourth quarter.

Garrett Nussmeier passed for 225 yards and two touchdowns for LSU.
Vanderbilt received the second-half kickoff and drove to Pavia’s 1-yard touchdown pass to Cole Spence, which increased the lead to 24-13.
LSU answered with a 92-yard drive that ended with a 62-yard touchdown pass from Nussmeier to Zavion Thomas and a two-point conversion pass that pulled the Tigers within three points.
Pavia scrambled 21 yards for a touchdown that increased the Commodores’ lead to 31-21 at the end of the third quarter.
Caden Durham broke a 51-yard run that helped LSU reach the Vanderbilt 1, but the drive stalled and Damian Ramos kicked a 23-yard field goal, leaving the Commodores with a 31-24 lead with 11:39 remaining.
The Tigers got the ball two more times, but had to punt both times. Vanderbilt got the ball back with 3:12 left, Makhilyn Young broke free on a 43-yard run and the Commodores ran out the clock.
LSU received the opening kickoff and drove to a 48-yard field goal by Ramos. On the ensuing possession Pavia’s 20-yard run set up his 1-yard touchdown run that gave Vanderbilt a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, Nussmeier threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Trey’Dez Green, but the Commodores answered with a 1-yard touchdown run by Sedrick Alexander on fourth-and-goal to give the Commodores a 14-10 lead with 5:52 left.
The Tigers had the first scoreless possession when Ramos’ 52-yard field-goal attempt was short and wide right.
Arizona State hands No. 7 Texas Tech first loss
Sam Leavitt passed for a career-high 319 yards and a touchdown, running back Raleek Brown scored on a 1-yard run with 34 seconds left and Arizona State blew a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter before recovering for a 26-22 upset over No. 7 Texas Tech in a Big 12 game Saturday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz.
The Sun Devils went 75 yards in 1:26 for the winning score after Texas Tech quarterback Will Hammond led the Red Raiders to a pair of touchdowns in the final 3:45 for a 22-19 lead.
Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson had 10 receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown as the defending Big 12 champion Sun Devils (5-2, 3-1 in Big 12) posted their first victory over an AP top-10 team since beating No. 6 Oregon 31-28 in 2019.
A pass interference penalty gave Arizona State the ball at the Texas Tech 2 with 40 seconds remaining, and Brown scored two plays later.
The Red Raiders (6-1, 3-1) played without starting quarterback Behren Morton, who aggravated a lower leg injury in a 42-17 victory over Kansas last week. They had never trailed in a game this season and had outscored their first six opponents by an average of 35.3 points a game.
Hammond completed 22 for 37 passes for 167 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in his second career start.
Hammond scored on a 1-yard run with 3:45 remaining to cut the Red Raiders’ deficit to 19-14. Less than two minutes later, he followed his 12-yard scoring pass to Reggie Virgil with a two-point conversion run with 2:00 remaining.
Texas Tech reached the Arizona State 28-yard line with three seconds remaining, but Hammond’s pass to the deep left corner of the end zone was tipped and fell incomplete.
Texas Tech became the fifth undefeated FBS team to lose this weekend, joining Miami, Mississippi, UNLV and Memphis.
Jesus Gomez made all four field goal attempts for the Sun Devils. His 28-yarder to cap a 16-play, 69-yard drive made it 19-7 in the first minute of the fourth quarter.
Luckie hauls in 3 TDs, No. 9 Georgia upsets No. 5 Ole Miss
ATHENS — Gunner Stockton completed 26 of 31 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns as No. 9 Georgia posted a 43-35 victory over visiting No. 5 Ole Miss on Saturday in Southeastern Conference play.
Stockton also ran for 59 yards and a score, while Lawson Luckie hauled in three touchdowns receptions for Georgia (6-1, 4-1 SEC), which outgained Ole Miss 510-351.
Ole Miss (6-1, 3-1) was paced by Trinidad Chambliss. He threw for 263 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 42 yards and two touchdowns.
After leading by a point at halftime, Ole Miss tacked on with Chambliss’s 75-yard pass to De’Zhaun Stribling on the second play from scrimmage in the third quarter.
Stockton then hit Luckie for a 3-yard score, before Georgia’s two-point conversion came up short, as the Bulldogs cut their deficit to 28-26 with 10:02 left in the third.
Chambliss continued the offensive barrage with a 2-yard rushing score, but Stockton responded with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Nate Frazier, cutting Georgia’s deficit to 35-33 with 12:56 left in the fourth.
After a punt by Ole Miss, Stockton hit Luckie for the duo’s third touchdown connection of the game, giving Georgia a 40-35 lead with 7:29 left.
Following Ole Miss’s second straight punt, Peyton Woodring added on with a 42-yard field goal, giving Georgia an eight-point lead at the 2:06 mark.
Georgia forced a turnover on downs on the Rebels’ final possession to secure the massive conference win.
After Woodring’s 51-yard field goal began the scoring, Chambliss’s 7-yard touchdown run gave Ole Miss a 7-3 lead with 5:47 left in the opening quarter.
Stockton then led Georgia to a 13-play, 75-yard drive, stamped with his 11-yard touchdown pass to Luckie on the first play of the second quarter.
Kewan Lacy’s 1-yard touchdown rush gave Ole Miss a 14-10 edge before Stockton’s 22-yard scamper helped Georgia retake the lead with 7:13 left in the first half.
Lacy’s second score gave Ole Miss a 21-17 lead, before Woodring’s 35-yard field goal as time expired cut the Bulldogs’ halftime deficit to 21-20.
Texas A&M holds off late Arkansas rally to stay perfect
Marcel Reed passed for 280 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another to help Texas A&M remain unbeaten with a 45-42 victory over Arkansas in Southeastern Conference play on Saturday at Fayetteville, Ark.
The No. 4 Aggies (7-0, 4-0 SEC) won their first seven games in a season for the first time since 1994 and withstood a resilient effort by the Razorbacks (2-5, 0-3 SEC), who lost their fifth consecutive game and their second since promoting Bobby Petrino to interim head coach after firing Sam Pittman.
Reed completed 23 of 32 passes and did not throw an interception. He also ran for 55 yards on six attempts. Rueben Owens II led the Aggies in rushing with 69 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
Arkansas led only once after its first drive when it took a 3-0 lead following a 22-yard field goal by Scott Starzyk that was set up by a 48-yard run by Mike Washington Jr.
But the Razorbacks never let Texas A&M build a lead larger than 11 points.
Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green played a huge role in keeping the Razorbacks in the game as he completed 19 of 32 passes for 256 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Green also ran for 86 yards and two touchdowns on 11 attempts. Washington led Arkansas with 147 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Green’s 4-yard touchdown pass to CJ Brown with 10 seconds left capped a 93-yard drive and cut the Aggies’ lead to three. But Texas A&M recovered the ensuing onside kick and Reed took a knee to seal the win.
Dayon Hayes, Cashius Howell, Marco Jones and Dalton Brooks each contributed to sacks over the Razorbacks’ final two possessions to help hold off Arkansas’ comeback attempt.
After Arkansas’ field goal to open the scoring, Reed led back-to-back touchdown drives to put Texas A&M ahead 14-3. Reed’s first touchdown pass from 24 yards out to Ashton Bethel-Roman put the Aggies ahead for good with 6:06 left in the first quarter.
No. 1 Ohio State jumps out early, blanks Wisconsin
Julian Sayin passed for 393 yards and four touchdowns to lead top-ranked Ohio State to a 34-0 rout of Wisconsin in a Big Ten matchup Saturday in Madison, Wis.
Sayin completed 14 of 15 passes for 169 yards in the first quarter when the Buckeyes jumped out to a 17-0 lead. He finished with 36 completions in 42 attempts.
Ohio State (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) has won 11 straight vs. Wisconsin, whose last victory in the series was a 31-18 win at home in 2010 over the then-No. 1-ranked Buckeyes.
Wisconsin (2-5, 0-4 Big Ten) has lost five straight after wins over Miami (Ohio) and Middle Tennessee State. The Badgers, who have not scored in eight straight quarters, have tallied just 34 points in those five losses.
Ohio State, which entered No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense at 6.8 points per game, took control early, scoring on all three first-quarter possessions.
The Buckeyes forced a three-and-out on Wisconsin’s opening series, then drove 89 yards in nine plays, capped by a 33-yard touchdown pass from Sayin to Carnell Tate. Sayin completed 8 of 8 passes on the drive for 95 yards.
Sonny Styles picked off a Hunter Simmons pass on the Badgers next series, but the Buckeyes settled for Jayden Fielding’s 38-yard field goal.
Wisconsin again went three-and-out and Ohio State went 70 yards in six plays, with Sayin again connecting with Tate from 10 yards out.
Fielding missed a 38-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter, but connected from 37 yards midway through the third quarter to put Ohio State in front 20-0.
The Buckeyes pushed the lead to 27-0 with a 13-play, 83-yard drive late in the third quarter, capped by Sayin’s 2-yard toss to tight end Will Kacmarek, who was wide open in the middle of the end zone. Sayin kept the drive alive with a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-1 on the Ohio State 26.
Tate had six receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Jeremiah Smith had nine catches for 97 yards.
Ohio State outgained Wisconsin 491-144.
Love’s career day helps No. 13 Notre Dame run past No. 20 USC
Jeremiyah Love rushed 24 times for a career-high 228 yards and a touchdown, and No. 13 Notre Dame pulled away for a 34-24 win over No. 20 USC on a rain-soaked Saturday night in South Bend, Ind.
Jadarian Price returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and rushed for 87 yards and a score for Notre Dame (5-2). CJ Carr completed 16 of 26 passes for 136 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Jayden Maiava completed 22 of 42 passes for 328 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for USC (5-2). Ja’Kobi Lane caught six passes for 111 yards and a touchdown.
Price put Notre Dame on top for good with his 100-yard kickoff return. He fielded the ball at the goal line, bounced off a couple defenders and found a crease for the end-to-end score that gave the Fighting Irish a 27-24 lead with 4:17 to go in the third quarter.
Carr punched in a 1-yard touchdown on a quarterback keeper to boost Notre Dame’s lead to 34-24 with 7:16 remaining in the fourth quarter.
USC opened the scoring on its first possession. Maiava connected with Lake McRee for a 10-yard touchdown to cap a 10-play, 75-yard drive.
Notre Dame quickly evened the score at 7-all. Love ran for 63 yards on his first carry of the game, and he followed up two plays later with a 12-yard rushing touchdown.
Ryon Sayeri kicked a 42-yard field goal to give USC a 10-7 lead with 8:04 to go in the first quarter.
The Fighting Irish took their first lead with 14:36 left in the second quarter when Price scored on a 16-yard run.
Sayeri kicked a 24-yard field goal to pull USC within 14-13 with 1:42 remaining in the first half.
