Bulls, Trojans sweep
Parker girls volleyball remained perfect Thursday night with a sweep over the visiting Honoka‘a Lady Dragons at the Lady Bulls’ brand-new SMART Center. Parker won by scored of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-18 in the team’s second match against Honoka‘a this season.
The Lady Bulls moved to a perfect 8-0 with no sets lost thus far. But perhaps their biggest challenge yet will be against local rival Hawaii Prep on Friday night inside Castle Gymnasium, with junior varsity set to play first at 5 p.m. Ka Makani is right behind Parker in the standings at 5-1.
The visiting green and gold fell to 2-5, and will next face Makua Lani Christian Academy at 5 p.m. tonight in the Honoka‘a Armory. It will be the second meeting between the two teams; the Lady Dragons won in straight sets on Aug. 27.
The Lady Bulls and Dragons’ junior varsity squads also squared off Tuesday, with Honoka‘a winning in two sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-16.
Over on the Hamakua Coast, Ka‘u made quick work of the hosting Laupahoehoe Lady Seasiders in a sweep of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-14. The Lady Trojans improved to 3-4 overall, while Laupahoehoe dropped to 2-6.
Ka‘u next faces Hilo at 5 p.m. tonight on the road, with junior varsity set to play first. The Lady Seasiders have lost two consecutive matches, and will look to right the ship in Pahoa town at 10 a.m. Saturday against the Lady Daggers.

HI-PAL to host
swimming event
Hawaii Island police invites keiki ages 8 to 17 to take part in the first-ever Kawamoto Classic Swimming Event, hosted by the department’s Hawaii Island Police Activities League (HI-PAL) in partnership with the County of Hawaii Parks and Recreation Aquatics Division and USA Swimming.
The free event will be held Sept. 27 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium at 260 Kalanikoa St. in Hilo.
The Kawamoto Classic is designed to introduce keiki to aquatic sports and promote water safety. Activities will include water polo demonstrations, diving instruction and swimming techniques led by student volunteers, coaches and staff from Waiakea and Hilo schools.
“This event provides a safe and fun opportunity for youth to gain valuable water skills while learning the importance of teamwork and healthy activities,” Lieutenant William Derr of the Hilo Community Policing Section said.
Registration opens at 8 a.m. on the day of the event. Walk-in participants are welcome, and forms will be available on site. A signed parent or guardian permission slip is required, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. A short swimming test will be administered to determine each participant’s skill level.
All participants should wear appropriate swimming attire and are encouraged to bring a light lunch or snack. Both beginners and non-swimmers are welcome.
