Police: HPP boy critically injured in ‘home accident incident’

Police say a 10-year-old boy was critically injured in what they describe as a “home accident incident” that took place Thursday morning at a Hawaiian Paradise Park residence.

Puna Patrol officers and Hawaii Fire Department personnel responded to a 10:34 a.m. call to a home located off the 15-1300 block of 22nd Avenue. According to police, HFD medics took over CPR that had been started by the boy’s mother — who had called 911 — and took the child by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center.

According to police, the boy was playing at home with a sibling when he accidentally rendered himself unconscious by tying an article of clothing around his neck, which obstructed his airway. The sibling was able to free the victim and notified his mother.

The victim, who is listed in critical condition, was medivaced to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu for advanced treatment.

Anyone with information relative to this case is asked to contact Detective Zenas Pacheco of the East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section at (808) 961-2384 or at zenas.pacheco@hawaiicounty.gov.
