A 35-year-old Kailua-Kona male pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries after being run over by a car early Sunday morning on Ali‘i Drive near the Kailua-Kona pier.

Responding to a call at 3:29 a.m., police investigators determined that a silver 2023 Toyota Corolla sedan ran over the 35-year-old man, who lying down in the middle of the northbound lane.

The impact of the collision caused the pedestrian to sustain severe head and internal injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, a 49-year-old man from Kailua-Kona, stopped to render aid and called authorities.

The injured pedestrian was taken to Kona Community Hospital and was subsequently transported to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for further treatment. He is in critical condition.

The male pedestrian might have been under the influence of an intoxicant, police said.

Police do not expect to file charges in this investigation, given that the driver stopped to render aid and the pedestrian’s possible impairment.
