Police seeking missing inmate, public assistance requested

Police are seeking public assistance in locating an inmate of Hale Nani Correctional Facility who failed to return to the facility following a furlough.

According to a Hawaii Police Department notice, 65-year-old Mark Gordon Kahalewai left the correctional facility at approximately 10 a.m. Sept. 1 for a scheduled furlough. He was ordered to return at 2 p.m. later that day, but failed to do so.

Kahalewai is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, 210 pounds, with a shaved head and brown eyes. He pleaded guilty in 2013 to a felony assault charge and was sentenced to 10 years of incarceration.
