Two more COVID deaths reported in Hawaii County

Two new deaths from COVID-19 were recorded in Hawaii County this week, both women between the ages of 70 and 79. Both of the women were hospitalized, and both were noted to have an underlying condition.

The two new deaths bring Hawaii County’s death toll to 239 people since the start of the pandemic in 2020.

Statewide, the Department of Health reported a total of 10 deaths over the last seven days, the highest since Jan. 15.

The statewide death toll has climbed to 1,829 people since the start of the pandemic.

The DOH reports deaths once they are provided the official cause of death, which in some cases can take weeks or even months to determine.

The latest variant shows nearly all analyzed cases over the last two-week period consisted of the omicron XBB.1.5 variant, which is considered highly transmissible.

XBB.1.5 is the dominant variant in Hawaii, accounting for roughly 84% of all analyzed cases.
