Shark attacks swimmer in Anaehoomalu Bay

A man in his 60s was attacked shortly after noon Sunday while swimming in Anaehoomalu Bay in South Kohala.

According to the Hawaii Fire Department, the man was about 200 yards offshore when the attack occurred. It’s unknown what size or type of shark it was.

The man was able to make it aboard a catamaran anchored in the bay, and the boat’s crew helped control the bleeding until a lifeguard arrived on a jet ski and took the man to a waiting ambulance ashore.

The victim was taken to Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea, where he was treated for injuries to his left hand and the back of his leg.
