Jimmy Moretekai Aka, 57, of Keaau died April 28 in Keaau. Born in Hakahau, Ua Pou, French Polynesia, he was a Christian minister and missionary, maintenance worker, glazier, fuel tank laborer, artist, craftsman and canoe paddler, finishing the Molokai Hoe Canoe Race in 2005 with New Hope Canoe Club. Kiyoshi “Mr. Viking” Hamakawa, 92, died April 13 in Hilo. Born in Hilo, he was a retired vice principal at Hilo High School who was named an honorary member of Hilo High’s Class of 1984 upon his retirement He was also a former biology and physical education teacher, professional boxer, football, basketball and track coach, U.S. Army Korean War veteran and Springfield College graduate, and was honored in 2016 by the Hilo High Foundation as a Distinguished Educator.
