During the week of May 2-8, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and two of the drivers were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and Puna, six each; South Hilo, three; and South Kohala, two.
So far this year, there have been 375 DUI arrests compared to 459 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18.3%.
There have been 270 major accidents so far this year compared to 282 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.3 %.
To date, there have been 15 official traffic fatalities, compared to eight fatalities at this time last year for the same time last year, an increase 87.5%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
