Nearly 1,400 new COVID cases after record breaking weekend

Nearly 1,400 new COVID cases have been reported statewide today after a record breaking number of new cases over the holiday weekend.

The state Department of Health announced that there were 1,384 new cases statewide Monday, 1,161 of which are on Oahu. Of the remainder, 103 are on the Big Island.

Today’s numbers are a decrease from those reported during the holiday weekend. On Christmas Eve, 1,808 new cases were reported, while on Christmas Day, 1,568 were reported. Boxing Day saw the most cases ever reported in a single day in Hawaii, with 2,177 new cases.

Before last weekend, the previous record for most new cases in one day was set on Sept. 2, when 1,060 new cases were reported.

No COVID-related deaths have been reported today, leaving the cumulative state total at 1,082. Over the weekend, one new death was reported Christmas Eve, and four new deaths were reported Christmas Day.
