According to data gathered by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory a 4.1 magnitude earthquake occurred at 2:13 p.m., originating from a point 3.9 miles below the earth’s surface within or near the Kahauale‘a Natural Area Reserve.
Hawaii County Civil Defense has not yet confirmed whether the earthquake presents a tsunami threat for the island.
Today’s quake was weaker than the 4.4 earthquake on Dec. 20 that heralded the beginning of the ongoing Kilauea eruption.
