Ernest De Luz, 89, of Paauilo died Dec. 29 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Honokaa, he owned Ernest De Luz Ranch, was a retired equipment operator for the County Public Works Department Highway Maintenance Division, and member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Private services at a later date. Survived by sons, Peter De Luz Sr. and Paul (Velma) De Luz of Paauilo and Stephen (Jamie) De Luz of Ahualoa; daughter, Margaret De Luz of Oregon; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. John “Jippy” Howard Mattos, 81, of Hilo died Dec. 10. Born in Hilo, he was a retired road and construction maintenance superintendent from the County of Hawaii Public Works Department and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation 8-11:15 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Prayer service at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery #2 at noon. Face masks and social distancing required. Survived by wife, Constance “Connie” Mattos; daughters, Tracy (Kekoa) Viela of Oahu, Nicole Aflague of Guam and Rhonda Mattos of Hilo; son, Cody Mattos of Hilo; hanai son, Thomas “Thompa” (Robin) Mattos of Hilo; brothers, Thomas (Jackie) Mattos of Wisconsin, Roy (Jill) Mattos of Honokaa and Gordon (Adele) Mattos of Kauai; sisters, Rosemary Nunogawa, Bernadette Tomas and Sherry (John) Macayan of Hilo; brother-in-law, Harry (Ella Mae) Freitas of Hilo; sisters-in-law, Cynthia Caravalho of Kohala and Aileen Mattos of Hilo; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Daniel Myron Olsen, 38, of Hilo died Jan. 7 at home. Born in Salt Lake City, he was a roofer and sheet metal worker. Survived by daughters, Lola-Jo Olsen and Summer Olsen; parents, Jeff and Susan Olsen; sister, Jenafer (Lenny) Wyatt; brother, Paul (Lauren) Olsen; mother of daughters, Rosy Moylan.
