Police continue search for missing Honaunau man

Police are still looking for a Honaunau man who has been missing since last Wednesday.

Lester Keala Lorenz, 44, was last seen Nov. 18 about 16 miles up Mana Road on the slopes of Maunakea.

Lorenz called police at about 1 p.m. that day from a site about 20 miles away from Waimea.

He is described as 5 feet, 8 inches tall, 300 pounds, with a heavy build, tan complexion, brown eyes and brown hair.

Responding officers arrived at the scene and found only Lorenz’s Jeep, but no sign of Lorenz.

Police Lt. Rio Amon-Wilkins on Tuesday said nobody has reported seeing Lorenz, nor are there any major leads about his location.

“We’re still conducting follow-ups in the area,” Amon-Wilkins said. “We’re still talking with people, his family, and hoping somebody will report seeing him.”

Amon-Wilkins said the police are continuing to monitor Lorenz’s cellular service provider to attempt to locate his phone, and also his bank accounts in case Lorenz — or somebody else — makes a transaction.

While Amon-Wilkins said there is still “no indication of foul play,” he added that there did not appear to be any obvious reason for Lorenz to leave his vehicle, which appeared to have become disabled as a result of an accident.

Temperatures in the area where Lorenz’s vehicle was found can drop to the low 50s overnight, and the area also has experienced frequent rain showers recently.

Anyone who might have seen Lorenz or has information about his whereabouts is asked to call the police nonemergency line at 935-3311 or contact Detective Grant Todd of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2381 or by email at grant.todd@hawaiicounty.gov.

Those who prefer anonymity can call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
