High surf advisory issued

Waves crash over rocks and onto the beach Tuesday at Kaipalaoa Landing in Hilo as a rainbow appears in the sky. The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for east and north facing shores of the Hilo and Hamakua districts through Thursday. A high surf advisory can mean strong breaking waves, shore break and strong currents, which makes swimming and other activities more difficult and dangerous. Hawaii County Civil Defense announced there will be no beach closures, although closures might occur without notice. Civil Defense also noted that property owners and boat owners who could be impacted by high surf should take the time to secure their properties and vessels.
