Lawmakers outline plans to make up state’s budget shortfall

HAWAII HOUSE DEMOCRATS The state Legislature reconvened Monday so lawmakers could begin discussing ways to fill a $1 billion gap in the state budget.

HONOLULU — Lawmakers said Monday they plan to plug a projected $1 billion hole in the state budget for the upcoming fiscal year by using money from the rainy day fund, reducing vacancies in state bureaucracies and issuing bonds.
