The decision was made based on the latest guidance and information from health officials and elected leaders, the DOE said.
School facilities have been closed to students since March 19 amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, but the school system remains open.
Schools have launched distance learning opportunities, and learning packets are distributed by email, school websites or in-person.
According to the DOE, the Department will shift its focus in the coming weeks toward summer school, which will largely occur using distance learning, as well as creating a plan for the 2020-21 school year given the changing parameters of social distancing and opening of businesses and services.
