During the week of Jan. 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 14; Kona, seven; Puna, Ka‘u and South Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 34 DUI arrests compared to 26 during the same period last year, an increase of 30.8 percent.
There have been 38 major accidents so far this year compared to 32 during the same period last year, an increase of 18.8 percent.
To date, there has been one official traffic fatality, the same as for this time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
