Surfers across the state will gather on beaches Sunday for an event in opposition to the Thirty Meter Telescope on Maunakea.
At Puhi Bay in Hilo — as well as beaches on Maui, Kauai and Oahu — surfers will attend “He‘e Nalu No Ka Mauna,” an event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for people to gather in solidarity with the protesters — who call themselves kia‘i, or protectors of Maunakea — at Maunakea Access
Road. The event — organized by Pu‘uhonua o Pu‘uhuluhulu, the camp that administers to and assists the kia‘i — will feature workshops, hula, music and Hawaiian cultural protocol and will culminate in a paddle-out ceremony at noon.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own surfboards, bodyboards and canoes.
