Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library in Waimea is offering a variety of events and activities for patrons of all ages during June. All programs are free and open to the public.
Scheduled events
— A Universe of Stories: 2019 Summer Reading Program Kickoff Event, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 1. Join the “Amazing Space Race” and learn about the planets in a race throughout the solar system. Each planetary station will feature experiments and activities for space travelers of all ages. Explorers who complete the race will receive a reward.
— Preschool story time: 10-11 a.m. Thursdays, June 6, 13 and 20.
— Kids craft: Galaxy bottles, 10-11 a.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, June 7. Make a colorful galaxy in a bottle. All supplies provided.
— Moon viewing with the West Hawaii Astronomy Club, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 12. View the moon through a variety of telescopes and bring your questions to “Ask an Amateur Astronomer!”
— Kids craft: Jet packs, 10-11 a.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, June 14. Every space explorer needs a trusty jet pack. All supplies provided.
— Adult craft, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15.
— Kids craft: Dissolving galaxies, 10-11 a.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, June 21. Bring a white shirt and transform it into a dissolving galaxy. Excluding white shirt, all other supplies provided.
— Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble performance, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 22. The Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble presents “Art of Taiko: Energy.” Like all phenomena in this universe, taiko is a result of forces interacting and affecting one another. Master taiko artist Kenny Endo has bee inspired by space, the heavens and universal energy in his original compositions. Contemporary pieces by Endo such as “Soaring,” “Jugoya” (“Crystal Clear Moon”), “Moonwind” (aka “Backside of the Moon”) and “Winds of Change” will be presented.
— Intergalactic Rapping with Mr Kneel, 1-2 p.m. Friday, June 28. Mr. Kneel’s “Outer Space” program will have everyone moving! This lively beat-box workshop focuses on building students’ self-respect, empowering them to build confidence to make music with no instruments or financial investment. Learning how to make funny noises can help children realize that with hard work, they can accomplish anything.
— Using the internet, 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 29. Arthur Goshtasby, who recently retired as professor of computer science and engineering at Wright State University in Ohio, will lead this short course.
Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library is proud to be one of 75 public libraries (and the only library in Hawaii) chosen to be part of the NASA@My Library initiative to engage public audiences nationwide in informal and lifelong learning with the excitement of NASA exploration and discovery. The program, led by the National Center of Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute in partnership with the American Library Association Public Programs Office, the Pacific Science Center, Cornerstones of Science and the Education Development Center, is made possible through the support of the NASA Science Mission Directorate as part of its STEM Activation Program.

The Thelma Parker Memorial Public and School Library, located at 67-1209 Mamalahoa Highway, is open from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 12:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The library will be closed June 11 in observance of Kamehameha Day.
