Motorcyclist dead in Kona crash

A motorcyclist died in a head-on collision with a sport-utility vehicle early Saturday evening near the intersections of Highways 180 and 190 in Kailua-Kona.

According to a statement from the Hawaii Fire Department, the motorcyclist, a man, was trying to overtake a vehicle on a blind turn when the collision with a Toyota 4-Runner occurred at about 5:40 p.m.

The motorcyclist, who hasn’t been identified, was dead at the scene. Four people in the 4-Runner were taken to Kona Community Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The statement listed “probably excessive speed” for the cause of the collision.

The scene was turned over to the Hawaii Police Department for investigation. Traffic was re-routed to Hina Lani Street.

This is the sixth official traffic fatality of 2019, compared to eight at the same time last year.
