Court records paint a picture of a troubled marriage prior to a shooting Thursday afternoon that hospitalized a 35-year-old Hilo woman.
Police arrested 41-year-old Corey K. Napoleon on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder after the 1:30 p.m. shooting on upper Kaiwiki Road in Hilo that left his wife, Miya Pumehana Napoleon, also known as Miya Sagucio, in critical condition at Hilo Medical Center.
Corey Napoleon hadn’t been charged as of early Thursday evening. Attempted second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment with the possibility of parole upon conviction.
Court records indicate Corey Napoleon has no prior criminal record in Hawaii.
According to police, responding officers found Miya Napoleon outside the home with a gunshot wound.
A neighbor, who declined to provide his name, said he was working outdoors and heard several gunshots he thought came from a semi-automatic weapon.
Police Capt. Greg Esteban of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Division said late Thursday afternoon there were “underage children at the residence” in Kaiwiki Homesteads. He added no one else was injured in the incident.
Esteban said officers were “securing the scene while detectives are preparing a search warrant” for a judge’s approval.
Miya Napoleon was charged Nov. 24 with misdemeanor domestic abuse. According to the complaint, the victim was Corey Napoleon.
She pleaded not guilty Feb. 26 and was given a trial date of July 1 in Hilo Family Court by Judge Henry Nakamoto.
In addition, both filed petitions for temporary restraining orders against the other late last year, according to court records.
Corey Napoleon filed twice, on Nov. 27 and Dec. 14. Both petitions were dismissed without prejudice.
Miya Napoleon filed a TRO petition Dec. 18 on behalf of herself and the couple’s three minor children.
Her petition also was dismissed without prejudice.
It’s unknown if police were able to transport Corey Napoleon to the cellblock or to Hilo Medical Center following the shooting.
Neighbors, who declined to identify themselves, said he had been in and out of the hospital recently and was housebound, with one calling him “extremely obese.”
The same neighbor described Miya Napoleon as “really pretty.”
