It’s been quite the run for Konawaena of late.
In a thrilling match that took an extra round of a shootout, the Wildcats defeated two-time defending state champion Iolani 2-1 in the quarterfinals at Oahu’s Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
The game remained scoreless through the first half. Twelve minutes into the second half, Iolani’s Ali Yoshida found the back of the net, but seven minutes later Konawaena’s Nanea Wall provided the equalizer.
Both teams remained scoreless through two overtimes as Wildcat keeper Kyanah Blas turned away 19 shots at goal in the game.
Neither team could take the advantage through the first five penalty kicks before Konawaena senior Annika Siddons scored the game winner.
The No. 3 seeded Wildcats will play in the semifinals Friday at 5 p.m.
It is the first time Konawaena has reached the semifinals since 2015. As the No. 4 seed of that tournament, the Wildcats defeated Kaiser in the quarterfinals before falling to eventual state champion Mililani 2-1 in the following round.
The Wildcats have never won a state title.
HPA, Kamehameha advance to D-II semis
Both Hawaii Preparatory Academy and Kamehameha are one game away from meeting for the third time in the last four years in the Division II state title match.
The Hawaii Prep girls defeated ILH champion and No. 3 seed PAC-5 3-0 in their quarterfinal match, while No. 1 seed Kamehameha beat Sacred Hearts 1-0.
Ka Makani’s Angela Cipriano led Ka Makani to victory with two goals, while Bella Police added one. All three came in the first half.
Kamehameha received a goal in the 46th minute from Nanea Wong Yuen.
The Warriors will play Kapaa in the semifinals Friday at 3 p.m. Hawaii Prep will face No. 2 Kauai at 1 p.m.
