Neglected roads
When you’re driving, and the driver ahead of you appears to be weaving in the lane of travel or constantly is applying the brakes, it is human nature to believe that the driver is driving drunk, high on drugs or is falling asleep at the wheel, maybe from a hard day’s work.
On the other hand, the driver might be totally sober and alert, but trying to avoid the potholes, ruts and cracks in the road, the many metal utility plate covers, or, in the evening especially during heavy rains, is having a difficult time maneuvering his or her car because of the faded and peeling white and yellow lines upon the roadway.
So, the next time you see an erratic driver ahead of you, he or she might not be impaired at all, but just trying to avoid many of our permanent and neglected roadway obstacles.

Wall idea is ‘silly’
How will a border wall stop people from entering legally as tourists and just staying here illegally afterward?
I am ALL for control of who lingers in the United States, but a checkpoint at the border is entirely wrong-minded. Instead, we need to require proper ID of citizenship or a current and valid visa before anyone can do anything of significance.
So, no bank accounts or charge accounts, no large purchases or insurance (e.g., vehicles which must be registered now), no rental contracts or land purchases, no employment, etc. — in ALL of these transactions, we want to know who is involved, often because they have certain rights and/or responsibilities under the implied or actual contracts formed by these transactions.
So, require proper ID that shows citizenship or a proper visa, Farmers or hotel operators, etc., who hire folks off the books can be caught and prosecuted harshly.
There is access to your country, even if one does not come as a declared immigrant. If we make it impossible for illegal immigrants to function, they will not be able to linger.
The wall is a silly idea and entirely misses the point, failing to give us any meaningful security.

Feed pigs to needy
In response to Michael Marlin’s recent letter about boars (Tribune-Herald, Your Views): I totally agree they are a nuisance.
It would be really wonderful if there was a way to dovetail eradication efforts with feeding the hungry. What about a huge monthly imu-cook — about 20 pigs at a time with taro, sweet potatoes and ulu? It could be a fun community event and even partial fundraiser to pay for itself. A flyer with kalua recipes could be handed out.
Somebody said with every generation, there are less hunters. It sure seems like there are more pigs. They are not safe in residential areas, especially. Anyway, just putting out some food for thought.
