Big Dog scholarships available

Applications for the Wayne “Big Dog” Joseph Scholarship are available at rarkin24@hotmail.com and from counselors and athletic directors at Hawaii Island public schools.


Four $1,500 stipends will be given to four runners who best meet the application criteria.

To be eligible, students must be a senior planning to attend a two- or four-year college, have a GPA of at least 2.5 and must have been a runner on a high school cross-country or track team. Volunteer activities and community service are also important factors, as is financial need. The deadline to submit an application in April 7, 2019.

Waiakea JV tourney starts Thursday

The high school basketball preseason begins Thursday as BIIF-runner-up Waiakea is scheduled to play three nightcaps at the Warriors’ junior varsity tournament

Waiakea’s varsity team will have a tournament of its own next week, but this week its faces Division I foes Keaau (Thursday), Kealakehe (Friday) and Hilo (Saturday) in 8 p.m. games after three JV contests each day. Pahoa’s varsity is also playing, while Christian Liberty is debuting its hoops program.
