Ke Kula ‘O Nawahiokalani‘opu‘u Iki Lab Public Charter School is thankful and honored to receive a generous two-year grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs as part of a $3 million grant to be distributed among 17 Hawaiian-focused public charter schools throughout the next two years.
Ke Kula ‘O Nawahiokalani‘opu‘u Iki Lab Public Charter School is thankful and honored to receive a generous two-year grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs as part of a $3 million grant to be distributed among 17 Hawaiian-focused public charter schools throughout the next two years.
“These schools are educating our next generation of Native Hawaiian leaders who will guide our lahui into the future,” said OHA Chief Executive Officer Ka Pouhana Kamana‘opono Crabbe said in a 2017 press release. “Providing more funds directly to these schools and students will help ensure that our alaka‘i (leaders) of tomorrow are grounded in both traditional and western perspectives.”
Nawahi is designed for families, teachers and staff who chose to speak Hawaiian as the first and main language of the home, and also those in the process of establishing Hawaiian as the dominant language of the home. The goal is to develop, enhance and maintain the Hawaiian language through education in the home and school.
The purpose of academics and global learning, i.e. foreign languages such as English and Japanese, is to develop skills to be applied in the revitalization of the Hawaiian speaking community through economic interaction with the outside world.
Nawahi serves families in Keaau and Waimea on Hawaii Island and Waianae on Oahu.
