In observance of National Nurse’s Week, the Hawaii Association of Professional Nurses has opened registration for its annual conference May 18-19 at the Grand Naniloa Hotel in Hilo.
This year’s conference is titled “Nursing Resilience: Care for the Caregiver.” The conference is designed by and for nurses to integrate the process of transition from compassion fatigue to compassion renewal. Other presentations will include: opioid prescribing guidelines, non-opioid treatments for chronic pain, metabolic syndrome, resilience skills, and workplace violence prevention.
The conference will host more than a dozen distinguished panelists and speakers, including advanced practice registered nurses, educators, nursing students, experts in alternative health care trends and state legislators.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Joseph Giovannoni of the Watson Caring Science Institute who is in private practice in Honolulu. The plenary speaker will be state Sen. Josh Green, MD.
The Hawaii Association of Professional Nurses is a nonprofit organization for all nurses of all specialties and education levels. HAPN focuses on education, legislation and uniting nursing by fostering leadership.
According to the association, compassion fatigue, sometimes referred to as “nurse fatigue” or “nurse burnout,” is a serious issue faced by many nurses, affecting productivity, health and safety, job satisfaction, retention and patient outcomes.
The cost of caring is an occupational hazard for nurses, HAPN says. For those in the health care professions, early recognition and improved self-care in and out of the workplace are key to creating wellness. Self-care is not just about making healthy lifestyle choices — it is about being present with one’s feelings, sensations and intuitive guidance to detect what is best in any given moment.
