The 14,000-square-foot, 12-bed home-like center was opened in 2012 with the generous support from the East Hawaii community.
But maintaining a facility that operates 24/7, 365 days a year takes many hands and hearts, said inpatient unit manager Jeff Calley.
One big-hearted group that helps ensure each patient in need and every loved one who visits is comforted by the facility’s surroundings is the Hui o Wahine organization.
Hospice of Hilo is grateful to have been selected as one of Hui o Wahine’s community service project organizations. Members dedicate part of a Saturday morning twice a month to weed the grounds of the facility under the supervision of the inpatient care center’s facility manager.
Throughout the year, Hui o Wahine members also collect toiletries to assemble kits with soap, a towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, brush and comb for the Hilo Medical Center and nonprofit organizations such as Hospice of Hilo.
