BYU-Hawaii to pay $5K to settle sex harassment suit
HONOLULU (AP) — An attorney representing Brigham Young University-Hawaii tells a federal judge the school will pay $5,000 to settle a former student’s lawsuit alleging her campus job supervisor sexually assaulted and harassed her.
Attorney Charles Price told U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin Chang on Monday that the university will pay the settlement in exchange for the lawsuit’s dismissal.
Her 2016 lawsuit says the university’s honor code banning premarital sex prevented her from seeking help.
Her attorney, Mark Gallagher, says she agrees to the settlement.
Price says the university is paying a “nominal” amount to resolve the lawsuit. University officials didn’t immediately comment about the settlement.
The woman also named her former supervisor as a defendant in her lawsuit.
The settlement dismisses any claims against him. His attorney says he passed a polygraph denying the allegations.
3 jail guards hospitalized after inmates attack
HONOLULU (AP) — Three guards at Oahu Community Correctional Center were hospitalized Saturday night after being attacked by a group of inmates who were being taken to receive their medication.
The guards suffered facial and head injuries after being attacked by about 18 inmates.
The area where the attack occurred was immediately placed on lock down.
Correctional center director Nolan Espinda said he is relieved the situation ended without a major incident. The guards are doing OK, he said.
Officers were initially able to identify seven of the inmates involved in the attack.
Criminal and internal investigations are underway.
The correctional center is designed to house 629 inmates, but the facility holds upward of 1,100 inmates.
