Disability forum slated for Sept. 7
Disabled community members and their circle of support are invited to attend the third annual East Hawaii Disability Legislative Forum from 3-7 p.m. Sept. 7 at Aunty Sally’s Luau Hale to meet legislators and county department representatives.
The event is free. Participants can voice their needs, learn how to ask for help, and listen and learn about changes happening to improve the lives of disabled.
Subjects of the forum are transportation, education, housing, employment and health. Snacks and beverages will be served. Aunty Sally’s is located at 799 Piilani St. in Hilo.

Voices for Justice rally is Monday
The public can join faith leaders from throughout East Hawaii for the Faith Voices for Justice rally to advocate for justice for all people. The rally is set for 4-5 p.m. Monday along Hilo Bayfront at the corner of Pauahi Street and Kamehameha Avenue.
“We repudiate the voices of race supremacy and segregation. We declare that a blessed society is one that nurtures all people, not just some,” said the Rev. Eric Anderson of Church of the Holy Cross UCC in Hilo, one of the organizers.
“We raise our voices for justice throughout the land and we raise our voices to oppose those who would privilege themselves at the expense of others,” Anderson added.
Lay people and clergy are warmly welcomed. Clergy are asked to wear robes, collars, stoles or another symbol that identifies them as a faith leader in their tradition. Signs will be provided, but feel free to bring your own that reflect the call to love and the sin of hate.

Mahalua reunion being organized
There is an effort underway to locate former families of Mahalua Camp, Mahalua Mauka, Kaieie Mauka and neighboring residents for a reunion.
The plantation-era communities were settled in the late 1930s and early ’40s. Living relatives in Hawaii are asked to spread the word to others not residing in the state.
