The 38-year-old man whose body was found Sunday morning near the bottom of Kilauea caldera was Leo Adonis, who was born Gregory Michael Ure, the Tribune-Herald has confirmed.
Adonis lived in Petaluma, Calif., but previously lived in Pahoa, according to Adonis’ father, who said his son “really loved Hawaii” and had left a suicide note in the backpack found at about 7 p.m. Saturday by two visitors hiking on Crater Rim Trail.
The National Park Service hasn’t officially released Adonis’ name. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park spokeswoman Jessica Ferracane said Monday rangers are investigating the death.
