Statewide, about 110 senior citizens die yearly from a fall, according to the state Department of Health. In an effort to minimize incidents, a fall prevention program is scheduled for 1-2:45 p.m. March 24 at the Aging and Disability Resource Center, 1055 Kinoole St.
In addition, instructor certification through the Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention Instructor Workshop is scheduled for March 25-26 at the center.
Full scholarships for the $25 instructor-certification fee are available for those who work with elderly individuals.

Grief support group offered
Hospice of Hilo is offering a free, six-week adult grief support group called “The Healing Journey” from 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesdays, March 1 through April 5, at 1011 Waianuenue Ave.
“To be alive is to experience loss and as a result of these losses we grieve,” said Hospice of Hilo community bereavement counselor Cathy Hough. “Participants are comforted by the validation of their grief and the knowledge that they are not alone.
“To light memorial candles for their loved ones, write in journals and to learn about the ways that grief ‘shows up’ empowers them to take charge and navigate their personal journey of loss.”

‘Edible Gardening’ workshop planned
Do you garden in the rain forest? Would you like to transform your lanai and lawn, or your field and fence into an abundant oasis of edible and multifunctional plants?
Join instructor Zach Mermel for the “Edible Gardening &Landscaping in the Rain Forest” two-part workshop from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 4 with a break for lunch at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus.
Course fees are $50 $45 for VAC members, plus a $10 materials fee.
Part 1 is titled “Edible Gardening in the Rain Forest” and Part 2 is “Landscaping with Native Rain Forest Plants.”
A handout of practical readings and resources for further learning is included for both sessions.
Attendees will learn the fundamental gardening “dos and don’ts” and interact with a wide range of useful, easy-to-grow edibles.
Participants will get to take home a number of edible plants at the conclusion of the workshop.
