A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck this morning near Hawaii Island.
The temblor was located 15 miles northwest of Kawaihae at a depth of 26 miles. It was recorded at 5:33 a.m.
The U.S. Geological Survey said light shaking was felt across the islands. Within two hours, the agency received 1,300 reports from residents who felt it.
Damage to buildings is not expected and no tsunami was generated.
USGS said the quake was likely caused by bending of the oceanic plate under the weight of the Hawaiian islands. Aftershocks are possible.
The earthquake caused no detectable changes in Kīlauea’s ongoing eruptions.
