With a solid effort on the road, Waiakea kept the BIIF boys basketball Division I race close by tightening the Division II standings as well.
Calvin Mattos scored 19 points and Shaun Kojima added 17 on Wednesday night as Warriors had a easier time than expected in a cross-divisional showdown, winning at Honokaa 63-44.
The Warriors (7-1) stayed on the heels of Konawaena (9-0) at the top Division I standings by suffocating the first-place Dragons, who suffered their second loss in Division II.
Waiakea hosts Hawaii Prep on Saturday before the defending champion pays a visit to the Wildcats on Monday.
No player reached double figures for Honokaa (7-2), which is now just 1 1/2 games ahead of Ka Makani.
Kainalu Lau, Kamuela Spencer-Herring and Ben Zindric each scored six points for Honokaa.
In JV, Waiakea won 58-50.
Konawaena 69, Ka’u 36
Austin Aukai scored 14 points and was one of four Wildcats to reach double figures in a win in Pahala.
Haoli Akau added 12 points for unbeaten Konawaena, which led 48-16 at halftime, Viliami Kaea finished with 12 and Austin Ewing had 11.
Janslae Badua scored 11 points for the Trojans (1-7).
Konawaena’s JV won 57-45.
