Legacy improving

After reading the Dec. 28 Tribune-Herald article about the Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, it saddened the administrative team to realize that Mr. Jeff Hansel did not fully investigate the whole story at Legacy Hilo.

The Legacy Hilo is new to the Hilo community. It continues to be a work in progress. Legacy is a place to help carry on the legacy of individuals from our community who need rehabilitative and nursing care.

Legacy is needed in Hilo. It is a place where individuals are able to seek employment in all areas, from unskilled to professional levels, and it currently employs 123 residents of Hilo and continues to interview for different positions as we develop.

We have been surveyed and evaluated by the state of Hawaii and federal licensing departments, as you all have been aware of. It would be unjust for the Hilo community — which I am a part of, being born and raised here — if Legacy did not make corrections and improvements in accordance with the federal and state guidelines.

We are appreciative for the federal and state licensing teams for assisting us to better assist our most valued members of the community, our kupuna.

As you all are aware, we started out with 27 areas for correction. We are now at three areas of correction and continue to look forward to working with the federal and state licensing teams. We look forward to assisting your family at the Legacy Hilo Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
