It was green day for 49 graduates who earned an honorary basic certificate in family and small-scale commercial hydroponic vegetable production this summer at the Keaukaha-Panaewa Farmers Association farmers market.
The farmers association’s free hydroponic classes are conducted by William S. Sakai, professor at the University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management.
KPFA and Sakai are hosting another six-week hydroponic workshop from 9 a.m.-noon every Saturday starting Nov. 12 at the farmers market on Railroad Avenue across from Home Depot.
The public is invited to register for the upcoming classes from 9 a.m.-noon Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 at the market. Volunteers Russell Pakani and Florence Pua will conduct the registration.
“We at KPFA want to gratefully acknowledge and thank Dr. Sakai’s professional expertise and time dedicated to serving the community in teaching countless numbers of people to become self-sustaining through hydroponic production of safe food for our tables,” said Howard Pea, Keaukaha-Panaewa Farmers Association president. “Please join us in learning to become advocates of healthy eating and sustainable lifestyles.”
“Furthermore, our mission is to strive and continue to work together as a growing community in gaining skills and knowledge which will contribute to a year round productive harvest through hydroponic practices,” Pea added.
