In honor of the 2016 centennial of the National Park Service, the board of directors of the Hawai‘i Pacific Parks Association approved an additional $100,000 in cash donations to the six parks in Hawaii and American Samoa served by the nonprofit organization.
This is in addition to donations of $233,000 approved last fall and the more than $900,000 in program services donated in the form of staffing. Proceeds from its nine park stores support interpretation, educational programs, research projects, publications and cultural activities in its partner parks.
The additional funding, “$100,000 for the 100 years,” will allow the parks to provide enhanced programs for the many 2016 centennial events and encourage visitors to “find your park.”
HPPA funding also will be used for Junior Ranger and youth intern programs; endangered species management at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the Hawaii national parks centennial juried exhibition at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, cultural and community programs in partnership with Haleakala National Park, community outreach events for the National Park of American Samoa and additional cultural and community activities at three cultural sites in West Hawaii: Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park and Pu‘ukohola Heiau National Historical Site.
