It was close for a half, but the UH-Hilo women’s basketball team got hit by Dominican’s scoring avalanche in the second half.
The Penguins defeated the Vulcans 85-54 on Monday in San Rafael, Calif., shooting 50 percent in the second half.
Felicia Kolb and Lauren Hong each scored 15 points for UHH (5-12, 5-7 PacWest), who trailed 41-37 at halftime.
Carly Hoboke scored 22 points to lead Dominican (14-6, 10-3).
“Unfortunately, we were not as good defensively as we have been for the last couple of games,” UHH coach David Kaneshiro said. “In the first half, we moved the ball and hit hits and gave ourselves a chance. The third quarter kind of got away from us.”
Also on Monday, UHH’s Kim Schmelz was selected PacWest Freshman of the Week.
In this past week’s two games, the freshman guard, from Rancho Murieta, Calif., averaged 12.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for the Vuls.
She scored 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting against Cal Baptist. She had 12 points, eight rebounds and a block in the win over Notre Dame de Namur.
Schmelz leads the Vuls with 13.1 points per game.
Schmelz struggled against the Penguins. She scored four points on 2 of 12 shooting.
