Alzheimer’s Association hosting workshops

In observance of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Association will host a series of lectures and movies on three Saturdays at the Aging and Disability Resource Center in Hilo.

The following is the series schedule:

• 1 p.m. Saturday, “What Is Dementia,” a workshop that reviews dementia, the symptoms, warning signs, misconceptions and potential treatments. The presentation includes short videos of people with the disease, family members of people with dementia and various professionals.

The movie “Away From Her” will be shown at 3 p.m. with a discussion following the film, and at 5 p.m., the Alzheimer’s Association will begin the first of a three-part program for anyone who is forgetful titled “Living with Forgetfulness.” Family members are encouraged to attend.

• 1 p.m. Nov. 14, “Legal Aspects in Dementia.” This workshop covers information about advance directives, various legal documents and planning strategies.

The movie “Iris” will be shown at 3 p.m. Based on the book “Elegy for Iris” by John Bayley, this film tells the true story of English novelist Iris Murdoch’s descent into Alzheimer’s disease and the unconditional love of Bayley, her partner of 40 years.

At 5 p.m., the Alzheimer’s Association will present part two of “Living with Forgetfulness.”

• 1 p.m. Nov. 21, “Communication and Behaviors in Dementia” covers information about possible causes and types of behaviors that might arise during the course of dementia as well as potential interventions.

The movie “I Am Not Fictional” will be shown at 3 p.m. The film was produced by three sons who took care of their mother while she suffered from dementia.

Part three of “Living with Forgetfulness” begins at 5.

All six workshops and movies are free with limited seating.
