Dillon Tate overpowered the University of Hawaii over seven no-hit innings Friday night, and No. 7 UC Santa Barbara won 5-0 to open a three-games series at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Rainbow Warriors (14-25, 5-7 Big West) managed just two hits, one by Konawaena graduate JJ Kitaoka, both after Tate departed having thrown 94 pitches. With his fastball registering as high as 98 MPH on the radar gun, Tate (6-3) struck out six and walked two in lowering his ERA to 1.57.
LJ Brewster (5-4) struck out six in 6 2/3 innings. He allowed eight hits and four runs with a walk.
Cameron Newell had three hits for the Gauchos (30-9, 7-3), including a RBI single in the seventh, and Peter Maris had three hits, scoring a run on a wild pitch in the fifth.
The series continues at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.
Softball
UH made the most of its five hits, getting an RBI single by Leisha Liilii, and Brittany Hitchcock survived 10 hits allowed in a 3-2 victory against UC Santa Barbara.
Kanani Aina Cabrales walked in a run but got out of a bases-loaded jam and recorded the final two outs for her third save as the teams opened a three-game series in Honolulu.
Rachel Lack singled in the second for Hawaii (27-19, 14-6) and scored on the back end of a double steal. Hitchcock (14-6) struck out three and didn’t walk a batter in 6 1/3.
UH and the Gauchos (15-31, 2-11) play a 4 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
Water polo
Paula Chillida scored both her goals in the fourth quarter, and No. 6 Hawaii beat Long Beach State 7-5 at the Big West tournament in Honolulu.
Caity Lopes da Silva scored the go-ahead goal midway through the for third-seeded UH, which will play second-seeded Cal State Northridge at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
