Now, add contemplation and that’s where the “art” of Zentangle becomes interesting.
Some consider it a type of meditation while others think of it as a mental exercise or a virtual trampoline for the mind. One thing is clear, the popularity of Zentangle is growing and it all starts with learning the basics.
In the “Zentangle: Basics” class, students will learn eight patterns, or “tangles,” and beginner shading techniques. These basic tangles are the building blocks to the process of Zentangle. The tools needed are quite simple: something to draw on and pens to draw with.
The basics class often is a prerequisite for other Zentangle classes.
“Zentangle: Basics” will be offered from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus. The fee is $30 for VAC Members and $35 for nonmembers. There also is a $10 supply fee. Light refreshments will provided.

Following Zentangle’s motto, “Anything is possible one stroke at a time,” instructors Lois and Earl Stokes have learned more than 140 tangle patterns from Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts, the founders of the Zentangle process. As the Big Island’s only certified instructors, they now share these tangles with their students and remind everyone no artistic ability is necessary. A mini-kit is included in the supply fee so that after the basics class students can tangle at home.
