Members of the Waiakea High School Robotics Club hosted seven students from Japan’s Ritsumeikan High School in Kyoto, for seven days in late July.
Along with welcoming the visitors into their homes, Waiakea students and advisors acted as Big Island tour guides. The group hiked on Mauna Kea, trekked through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and spent time at the beach. The Ritsumeikan students could have chosen a foreign homestay in Canada, England or Australia, but they wanted to come to Hawaii and were rewarded with the natural beauty of the island and a bonding experience with the Waiakea students.
This was the third time in the past six years that Waiakea hosted Japanese students.
