HPM awards scholarships

HPM Building Supply recently awarded three Big Island graduating high school seniors and two Hawaii Community College students with scholarships.

For more than 30 years, the annual Barney S. Fujimoto Memorial Scholarship has promoted academic achievement and excellence to Big Island high school students. Barney Fujimoto, a past president of HPM, strongly valued the importance of higher education. Today, HPM continues to express these same values through this $1,000 scholarship.

Recipients Reyn Mukai of Waiakea High School and Sienna Okimoto of Ka‘u High School will each attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the fall. Mukai plans to pursue a degree in computer engineering and Okimoto will major in nursing. Eagle Scout and Waiakea High School graduate Adam Onishi will attend UH-Hilo to earn a degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting.

Hawaii Community College students B.J. Francis and Kent Grace were selected to receive $750 “Building Future Builders” scholarships toward their second year in the carpentry program.

Applications for the annual Barney S. Fujimoto Scholarship will be available again at www.hpmhawaii.com in January.

Since starting 93 years ago as a small family owned lumber yard, HPM Building Supply — now 100-percent employee-owned — has grown to include three-full service building supply centers and four lumber yards on the Big Island, as well as locations on Oahu and Kauai. The company manufactures pre-engineered trusses and wall panels, metal roofing, and pre-hung doors and treats its own lumber.
